Class overview

The course explains what’s what in modern language technology, overviewing the main categories into which approximately 1000 tools can be grouped.

This class is for professionals wondering what types of automation are available to help them with translation and localization efforts. We’ll look at how can we automate quality. What tools to use for terminology management. What the state of modern interpreting and audiovisual translation solutions is. And how and where machine translation is being implemented in 2021?

To answer such questions, we’ll talk about the evolution of CAT-tools and TMS, business management in translation, quality assurance and review. We’ll touch on  the subject of terminology management, discuss MT and MT integrators, interpreting systems, Audiovisual technology, marketplaces and platforms. We’ll even check out other groups of tools needed for daily operations within our industry (TMX editors, task trackers, bug trackers, etc.)

After finishing the class, participants will have gained a comprehensive understanding of the modern language technology landscape and will become more familiarized with the most important parts of it.

Yulia Akhulkova graduated from the Moscow University of Electronic Engineering as a software engineer. Since 2010 she has worked in localization, combining strategic, management, quality and marketing functions. Yulia’s experience in language services, together with the urge to popularize the localization industry itself, help her contribute to Nimdzi’s research and analysis. Being an active user of various translation and localization tools, Yulia is a frequent guest speaker at international conferences and a university lecturer on language technology. She is the author of the Nimdzi Language Technology Atlas 2020 and the lead researcher of the Nimdzi Language Technology Atlas 2021.

As Chief Researcher, Sarah analyzes the language services market from all angles. Her experience as a translator and conference interpreter allows her to have a unique view of the industry. Her background in journalism has always led her down the path of critical thinking and objective reporting. Sarah leads the research for Nimdzi’s global market studies, such as the Nimdzi 100 and the Nimdzi Interpreting Index. Her research further focuses on Virtual Interpreting Technology (VIT). Sarah also still works as a freelance conference interpreter.

Belén is a compulsive lifelong learner. She holds a BA in Translation and Interpreting Studies, an MA in Audiovisual Translation, and a PhD in Translation and Intercultural Studies. But her experience in the localization industry goes beyond the theory. Belén has worked in the game localization industry for more than 5 years in different positions (PM, training specialist, marketing strategist and copywriter, translation manager, and quality and innovation director). She combined her years in this industry with her true calling: training others. She has been teaching game localization and subtitling technologies in several MA programs and workshops in Spain, UK, and France for more than 5 years. As a continuous learner and a passionate trainer, Belén now leads Nimdzi’s eLearning program with a Design Thinking approach aimed at providing the best learning experience to Nimdzi Partners. As an academic with hands-on experience in the media industry, she thoroughly leads the research for the media localization landscape. Apart from all the studying and work, Belén loves binge-watching a good show with good company and cares about the environment and animal welfare.
