Plantix is a game-changing mobile app for farmers and agricultural workers that helps them diagnose and treat crop diseases, pests, nutrient deficiency problems, and more. There is a global Plantix community, too, in which users can share their knowledge.
The app was developed by Berlin-based PEAT in 2015 but quickly branched out overseas. Plantix’s biggest market is now India, where millions of smallholder farmers benefit from previously inaccessible information about improving crop yields.
Korbinian Hartberger (Korbi) has been leading Plantix’s localization program since its inception and had some fascinating insights to share about both his role and Plantix’s global operations.
Korbi wears many hats within Plantix: localization, HR, and external relationships are all part of his role.
A valued, close-knit team of freelancers is preferred over language vendors, although the work involved in managing a vast network of translators is significant enough for Korbi to consider alternative options. So far, though, nothing else has stuck.
Translators work in pairs or small teams to help ensure that quality is high and errors aren’t overlooked.
Plantix’s localization model is full of imperfect solutions, but that’s just part of startup life. Korbi is good at finding creative solutions and rolling with the punches.
