How to Choose Your VIT Provider

At the moment, we count 75 virtual interpreting technologies (VIT) on the market.

Some are meant to be used at conferences, some by end-users traveling abroad, some are only suitable for web conferencing. The functionalities range from allowing multi-language webinars to one-on-one video calling and some even have the bandwidth for unlimited users, which means that they can potentially be used for stadiums of people.

So, how do you know which one to choose?

In The Nimdzi Technology Atlas, we have grouped the current VIT solutions into five categories and it helps to know them before you dive in:

  1. Interpreter scheduling: These are platforms that are extremely useful for Language Service Providers (LSPs) looking to make their workflows more efficient and cut costs. They are particularly useful for LSPs that manage a lot of onsite interpreting assignments.
  2. Conference interpreting apps: These are platforms designed for conferences and webinars. Depending on the solution, the interpreters can be offsite, onsite in a different room, or in some cases the technology simply replaced the need for interpreting equipment.
  3. Remote interpreting apps: These are companies that offer over-the-phone interpreting (OPI) or video remote interpreting (VRI) solutions for a variety of use-cases, including healthcare, tourism, and business.
  4. Speech recognition: Speech recognition software is becoming ever more evolved and present in prominent technology like Siri and Alexa. It’s also becoming more relevant for business and can be a useful asset.
  5. Wearables: Wearable technologies, or machine interpreting technologies, are solutions that don’t rely on any interpreters at all. The technology uses a mix of speech recognition, machine translation, and text to speech synthesis.
